Winning Start for the Speech and Debate Team 2009-2010 Season
Congratulations to the Mustang Speech and Debate team for a successful start in the 2009-2010 season!
With Mr. Todd Newkirk’s devoted coaching and Mr. David Tow’s inspiring classroom instruction, the Varsity team opened the season by winning the 1st place Sweepstakes Trophy at the Varsity Debate Tournament held at San Dieguito Academy on September 11-12th. The SDA team earned awards in several events at that tournament, including 2nd and 3rd in Parliamentary Debate, 2nd and 8th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and 2nd and 3rd in Policy Debate.
With one of the largest teams in recent years, 30 of 41 SDA team members competed in the Jack Howe Invitational Tournament at Cal State Long Beach on October 3-4th. During two days of intense competition both novices and seasoned varsity members bonded as a team while excelling in their events. The SDA team placed in individual speaker awards for Novice and Open Division Lincoln Douglas debates, advanced to Octafinals in Novice and Open Division Lincoln Douglas, and advanced two teams to quarterfinals in Novice Policy. The team’s individual successes culminated in San Dieguito winning the 1st place Debate Sweepstakes Trophy at CSU Long Beach.
The team is looking forward to a full Fall 2009 schedule that includes the upcoming Cal State Fullerton Invitational, the Meadows Invitational (Las Vegas), a Novice tournament, the Damien Invitational, the USC Invitational, and the LCC Winter Classic, among other events.
Many thanks to the team parents and SDA Foundation for their donations of time, money, food, and transportation. Your help and support is very much appreciated.
