Welcome Back: a message from the President

Welcome back! As the SDA Foundation President, I’d like to encourage you to be an active part of your student’s school and help us to maintain the tradition of excellence at SDA. There are so many ways you can be involved and have a chance to get to know other SDA parents. We encourage you to donate your time, share your knowledge, and make a financial gift. Each of these enriches the educational experience for your student and for all students at the Academy.

Thanks to your support and outside grants we were able to fund the following projects last year:

  • $40,000 to all departments for basic materials and supplies**
  • $ 7,000 to support Writing Lab Tutor Program**
  • $25,000 in grant funding to the Science Department to support new bio-tech curriculum
  • $10,200 to Science Department for lab supplies, consumable materials and test software**
  • $40,000 in Corporate funding to support Robotics program
  • $ 5,000 to the Music Department for the maintenance and purchase of sheet music and musical instruments
  • $ 6,400 for a professional technician for theater
  • $ 2,000 for video cameras for student use**
  • $1,500 for Counseling department support**
  • $ 700 for transportation to student team-building course**
  • $ 300 in scholarships to cover student fees for testing**

**Approved through Grants Committee

Going forward we have much to look forward to despite the bleak economic forecast for school budgets. This fall we are looking forward to providing the following opportunities for our parents to support and connect to the SDA community:

No Host, No Agenda Lunches- affectionately called ‘Group Therapy’. A group of parents get together the once a month at the various restaurants that have supported our school to just talk. The first one of the new school year is scheduled, appropriately enough, on the first day of school at Ki’ s. Join us at 12:30 to celebrate a new school year and – for those of us who have just sent our kids to college – an opportunity to laugh and cry together. Future dates and locations will be announced in the weekly bulletin.

SAT and ACT test prep classes and boot camps. SDAF has teamed up with both Revolution Prep and Catalyst to provide test prep to our students on campus for every SAT and ACT that will be offered in the next school year. A portion of the fees for these classes will be donated to the foundation which we will use to offset the continually depressing budget situation facing our district.

Mustang Magic – our annual fundraising gala and one of the hottest tickets in town last year – will be on October 30th in the Mission Towers at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Save the date for a night of Fun and fundraising!

Our new Mustang Card provides deep discounts and special offers to local businesses. Buying one of these cards for $20 (cash or check only) helps the tireless volunteer members of our various councils achieve their specific goals.

Escrip- We are also focusing on raising awareness among our families about how to earn ‘free money’. SDA Foundation participates in the EScrip program. I am sure many of you have been enrolled since the elementary school days. When you renew this year be sure to designate SDA. All the money we receive from EScrip will be dedicated to replacing and upgrading technology on campus. Check out the following link, register, and help us help our kids.

We are a part of a unique and innovative learning community – one that believes in the potential of every student to achieve their personal best. Just as your student chose to come to San Dieguito, I hope that you will choose to become a part of this unique community through the SDA Foundation.

I hope that you will call upon the Foundation parents for support. If I can answer any questions, please give me or one of the Board members a call. You can also call Sheila Durkin at the Foundation office (760) 753-1121 ext. 5152 or email us at: sdafoundation@sduhsd.net.

Thank you for supporting our students. I look forward to seeing you on campus!

Abby
