Providing food and refreshments will be Mosaic, the new student-run business. Local community service organizations will also be invited to participate, making this a true community celebration.

All proceeds will go to support student programs and community needs. The Rummage Sale will adjoin the new Clayton E. Liggett Performing Arts Center, in front of the Academy, just east of the I-5 on Santa Fe Drive.

A Piece of My Heart is based on the true story of five women nurses and one entertainer in the Vietnam War. Their worlds are transformed when they realize the destruction and devastation the American service men face on a daily basis. These women (Kristin Perkins, Madeleine Karydes, Emi Karydes, Elisa Figueroa, Sarah Graciano, and Brigitte Williamson) come from all different walks of life. Each has their own story and reason for joining the war effort. There is one man (Dakota Speas) who portrays all of the male roles. The story takes place in several different locations over the course of 20 years.

Thoroughly moving, A Piece of my Heart makes for a powerful Theater for a Cause production, an annual tradition at San Dieguito Academy in which all proceeds go to a related charity. All donations and proceeds earned from A Piece of my Heart will go to The Veterans Village of San Diego.

About the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD)

Founded in 1981, VVSD is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to “Leave No One Behind.” VVSD is a nationally-recognized leader in providing prevention, intervention, treatment, and employment services to military veterans, including men and women who have recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. VVSD was featured on “CBS 60 Minutes” in October 2010. Each year VVSD provides services to more than 2,000 military veterans who have served and sacrificed for our country.

This year San Dieguito students have had the unique opportunity to learn from and work alongside professional theatre artists in the Intrepid Shakespeare Company, gaining practical work experience in areas of stage management, costume design, lighting design, sound design, set design and acting.

Now the Intrepid Shakespeare Company presents its inaugural intern production: a special 1-hour version of Richard II featuring students from San Dieguito High School Academy. Tickets are only $5 per person and proceeds will be donated to the Theatre Department, so please come!

The Intrepid Shakespeare Company was called “one of the city’s most incendiary young theatres” by Performances Magazine, and it makes its home in San Dieguito’s very own Roundabout Theatre.

Former San Dieguito drama teachers Clayton Liggett and Gerald Jordan would be proud!

The class of 1974′s very own Peter Sprague is now a San Dieguito parent and a member of the Peter Sprague Trio, which recently released Mill Creek Road. This CD is currently number 12 on the national jazz charts!

If you want to hear him live, you’re in luck — because he’ll be playing on campus on Saturday, March 20 at 4:30 pm!

This benefit concert will help purchase recording equipment for our new Performing Arts Center, including speakers, mics, amps, etc., all of which will be used by students for music classes, Battle of the Bands, Comedy Sportz, theater productions, etc.

The owners of Oggi’s Pizza & Brewing Co. in Encinitas, Charidy (’92) and Cherock (’89) Alcoser, were both born and raised in Encinitas, and also attended San Dieguito High School.

Recently they offered to support the newly reconstructed Boys Water Polo Team at San Dieguito High School Academy by giving the team a portion of their sales earned between 11:00 am and 9:00 pm Tuesday, November 2nd.

Those alumni interested in supporting our Boys Water Polo team can chow down on pizza or any of Oggi’s other menu items, but they must (bring this flyer) to get credit. This offer applies to calling in and taking out.

Over there on stage people are dying and crying and kissing and yelling. Here it is a different story all together, almost scripted but not quite, and, unlike the play onstage, this one ends happily. —San Dieguito student Kristin Perkins, now playing “Petra” in the current production of “Romeo and Juliet”.

Kristin won the role of “Petra,” a character who doesn’t appear during the second act. In her Intrepid blog entry, Kristin describes her offstage experiences in the green room. “The green room of the second act is a play itself which I am both audience to and actor in. The entrances and exits are all as well timed as those onto and off of the stage.”

According to Intrepid Artistic Director Sean Cox, Intrepid interns have the unique opportunity to learn from and work alongside professional theatre artists, gaining practical work experience in areas of stage management, costume design, lighting design, sound design, set design and acting.

“Interns learn firsthand why theatre is regarded as a collaborative art,” says Cox.

Romeo and Juliet is playing in the Roundabout Theatre on the San Dieguito High School campus only through October 17, so hurry!

John is presenting a number of mixed media/photo works based on various groups of Gypsies he has studied during his travels. Emily is presenting a group of photo collage pieces she has done at UCLA. Their work really looks great together!

The opening is scheduled to be at 4:30 this afternoon at the gallery. The opening event was posted on Facebook and there were 37 alumni confirmed as guests with about the same number as maybes so if the weather holds it should be well attended!!

The gallery will be open until next Friday 1st through 3rd period and 4th period with a request. Don’t miss this one!
