1937: Football team

"Football! We have to have football" was the cry at San Dieguito; so football it was. Coach Lindsay assembled his staunch squad of twenty-five boys and laid down the facts and rules. For two weeks the squad worked out in gym suits, and three days before the first practice game the suits were issued. After a hearty send-off, the new-named Mustangs set off to "bring home the bacon" from Grossmont’s Junior Varsity. Score 19-0.

A spirit which was not to die developed in the hearts of the players and the school. During the next week a pep song was composed by Morris Anthony with words by the Pep Committee [Ruth Pelko and Ruthie Russell]. It was completed for the Annual Football Bonfire Rally which was held before the night of the Army and Navy game.

Through a drizzling rain the following day, the Mustangs galloped to victory in the last quarter with a score of 6-0. The Mustangs were on their way!"
