Looking Ahead to 2017 Schedule

Hey Gang, a note about some 2017 scheduling.

SDA VB camp will be Tues-Thur July 11-13. Sign ups on the camp page.

The fall schedule is still in flux but it appears that most of our conference (league) games will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. This is a change from the past so keep it in mind when scheduling trips, etc. — the team will have many Friday matches in September and October.

Also, the varsity team will play in Las Vegas on Labor Day weekend. The play will be on Fri 9/1 and Sat 9/2. Travel will probably be Thurs 8/31 and Sun 9/3. We need a couple parent to organize the hotels and food logistics.

The SDA Mustangs Girls Beach Volleyball 2017 season will begin the week of February 20th. We look forward to great competition and some fun on the beach!

The link to the online Registration is here:

Registration should be in ASAP or at least a week before tryouts. The season will run from February 21 thru May 5th and playoffs the following week. For the first time, winners of the playoffs will go to the state playoffs at Huntington Beach May 20th.

The courts at LCC are no longer available to us but we are very lucky to have found a great and even better option for this year. Practices will be from 3:30-5:45 at Del Mar Dog Beach in collaboration with the SD Beach Volleyball Club.

SD Beach Volleyball Club has offered their facilities and coaching staff at a fraction of their normal prices to support the SDA Girls Sand Volleyball program. Any players wanting to jump in and start before and continue after our season are encouraged to so. The SD Beach website link is here:

Or feel free to contact club President Marc Lomeli at 760-505-7766 with any questions. Note that before and after our season the fees would be at their standard rates.

Tryouts are during the first week, 2/21/17-2/24/17. Those that may not make the team will still be invited to be part of the SD Beach Volleyball Club at the same reduced pricing for the season’s ten weeks.

Friday practice days we will have playoffs to help determine Varsity and JV teams for matches with the other schools each week. The combined cost for SD Beach Volleyball Club fees, San Diego High School Sand Volleyball League fees, insurance and program equipment expenses are as follows:

Option 1: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week for 10 weeks is $367. One check to SD Beach Volleyball for $250 and one check to SDA Foundation for $117

Option 2: Thursday matches and Friday practice for 10 weeks is $217. One check to SD Beach Volleyball for $100 and one check to SDA Foundation for $117

Spiritwear and jerseys will be sold separately. Fees for SD Beach and the Foundation checks will be due by the end of the first week of practice please!

Reis Cup at UCSD, Friday Sep 24 7pm

Hey SDA VB gang, the Reis Cup at UCSD is this Saturday. Some of you may have known Karen Reis. Karen was a volleyball player at UCSD and a much-loved coach for SDA girls volleyball. When Karen and her brother David died in 2012 it was a huge blow to the SDA volleyball program and the volleyball community in San Diego. UCSD hosts the Reis Cup each year in honor of Karen and David. It will be played this Saturday at UCSD Rimac Arena starting at 7pm against Cal State San Marcos. SDA alumni Emily Kimball and Amanda Colla will be in uniform for UCSD!

Welcome to the 2016 Season

Everyone — the annual “welcome letter” is going out today. Players are responsible for receiving it on their group chats and forwarding it to their own parents. Emails were sent to parents as well, however many of those emails bounced because players provided the wrong email addresses (for themselves or their parents), and we don’t have all emails for all parents, especially on the novice team which is understandable. So if you did not receive the letter by email, make sure you get it from your player. See you September 1 at 6pm for the mandatory parent meeting — if you don’t know what I’m talking about, make sure to read the letter. Go Mustangs!

TODAY ONLY: practice is changed due to a conflict in the gym. FS and JV will be 2-4, Varsity will be 4-6. Spread the word. By the way, have you been watching Karsta Lowe and the US womens team in Rio? Karsta played at LCC. She was a 2’s player who worked her way up to the 1’s team for her Wave club team. She was a walk-on at UCLA but through hard work she earned a scholarship and by the time she was a senior she led the country in kills and points. She has had a fantastic Olympics, coming off the bench to make a lot of important kills for the US team!

Open gym will be Monday, Wednesday, Friday at Sage Creek H.S. 6:30pm – 8:30pm beginning Wednesday June 29. It will continue through Friday July 15th.

Have you done your clearance yet?

If not, you had better get on it. Girls VB has a time crunch that no other sport has because the season begins August 1 but SDA offices are closed the entire month of July. Megan Thompson in the SDA Athletics office has offered the following: if you have steps 1 through 3 done you can turn them in to her NOW. On June 14 when grades are available, she will confirm your grades for you and will mark you as “cleared” saving you the trouble of having to bring her a hard copy of the grades. This offer only applies to continuing students. Incoming freshmen and transfers will still need to provide hard copy of grades. Questions? Call Megan Thompson in Athletics, (760) 753-1121 x5167,

Remember, these are the four steps needed for getting cleared, more details below:

1. process, producing a clearance confirmation print out
2. Physical signed by an MD, DO, PA or NP
3. Photocopy of health insurance card
4. Photocopy of June grades

Summer Strength and Conditioning Program

Coach Dana Evans, SDA’s JV Field Hockey coach and certified personal trainer, is running Mustang Fit, a 5-week summer Strength and Conditioning clinic open to all SDA students (male and female) and incoming freshmen. The goal of the clinic is to condition Fall athletes for the upcoming season.

The Mustang Fit clinic will meet 3 days a week, and will run from June 20 to July 21. The cost is only $75.

Please be sure that you DO NOT participate in this strength program during the dead period (“no contact period”) for girls VB, see below for dates of the dead period.

More information on the clinic and Coach Dana Evans is posted on the SDA Field Hockey Website.

Getting Cleared for 2016 SDA Girls Volleyball Season

This is your warning — please get this done soon. The season is moved forward one week (beginning Aug 1) and SDA is closed the entire month of July. Girls volleyball begins earlier than any other sport and thus has the least time to get this stuff done before the season begins. There are four hard copy pieces of documentation you need to get to Megan Thompson at SDA athletics before the end of June. If you wait too long to get cleared and can’t get your clearance form done, or your physical, or your blue card — you won’t be able to try out.

Instructions for what to do are on the general SDA athletic web page: if you cannot follow it, we will try to summarize below but questions should be directed to the SDA Athletic department, not your coaches.

The executive summary is: Instead of filling out all those pages in the previous athletic packet, parents and athletes will now go online and complete their athletic clearance. 4 pages will be turned in to Megan Thompson in the athletic department:

1. process, producing a clearance confirmation print out
2. Physical signed by an MD, DO, PA or NP
3. Photocopy of health insurance card
4. Photocopy of June grades

Here’s what to do:

1) Complete the online “clearance process”. The website is This is brand new and may not work perfectly yet, so plan accordingly and give yourself time. SDA Athletic department’s instructions are here: Get a hard copy of the clearance confirmation page, you will get this at the end of the online clearance process.

2) Get your sports physical done, and get a hard copy of the physical report. See below for info about a cheap, easy way to get your sports physical done at SDA. The sports physical needs to be signed by an MD, a DO, and physicians assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP).

3) Get a hardcopy of the front and back of your health insurance card.

4) Get a hardcopy of your June report card. They will be posted on Aeries on June 14. You need a 2.0 GPA to participate in sports.

Go in person to the Athletic office and give the hard copies of a) clearance confirmation, b) sports physical, c) health insurance card (front and back), d) June report card to Megan Thompson. Please note that she will be out of the office the entire month of July along with the rest of the SDA staff. Also, she will be working at Sunset HS from June 14 – June 30 (two blocks from SDA). Additionally, she will not be in the office June 21, 27, or 28.

Since the system is new, and there are a limited number of days to meet with Megan and give her all the stuff, and because the entire school is shut down all of July, and Tryouts begin August 1 … don’t procrastinate.

Sports Physicals for Fall 2016

It’s fun to go to the doctor! You must have a sports physical in order to get a blue card to be on the volleyball team. Both the sports physical and the blue card must be done before tryouts. Do it before July, since the school is shut down the entire month of July and tryouts start August 1. Probably a good idea to get it done in May or June. If you want to sign up for a super cheap and easy sports physical held at SDA, go here: Don’t wait too long, it sold out last year.

It’s time for Mustang Sand Volleyball!

From: Gary Sagunsky (

The Mustang Girls Sand Volleyball 2016 season is just one month away. The first allowed practice is February 20th. We should be having tryouts the following week.

High School Sand Volleyball is run by the Sand Volleyball Association of San Diego. We are hoping to have the sport sanctioned by the CIF within the next year or two. Until then the program is run basically the same as the college NCAA Sand program and CIF eligibility requirements. Please visit the Sand Volleyball Association link is here:

This year we will have 29 High Schools participating, up from 24 last year. There will be six league divisions with two leagues in the open “Power” division. San Dieguito is assigned to the North “Power” league this year with La Costa Canyon, Torrey Pines, and Cathedral. LCC has won the open championship the last three years with Torrey runner up last year.

Practice will again take place at the La Costa Canyon sand volleyball courts. The courts have recently been refurbished and redirected facing north south. No more sun in the eyes while playing. There is now more room for warm ups and spectators during matches. Practice will be Monday and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30. Matches will be at Ponto Beach each Thursday after school.
We will have more information on signup registration and tryouts coming soon.
