Course Description:
Meets VPA/UC/CSU requirements. Also meets PE requirement (ISMPE). Recommendation: Instructor approval or audition. This advanced level, year-long course, is designed to provide the opportunity for instrumental music students to be part of a musical ensemble that rehearses and performs various styles of music throughout the school year. Students enrolled in the class should play at an intermediate to advanced level. Students at this level should be comfortable with reading and recognizing scales, various rhythmic patterns, key signatures, and standard music terminology. HW per week: 120 minutes.

Audition Requirements for the 2011-2012 Wind Ensemble:
Winds/Bass:
1. Chromatic scale – ascending and descending (full playable range of instrument)
2. 2 Major scales – ascending and descending; to be chosen at audition (extra points awarded for multiple octaves)
3. Short prepared piece – (will be posted on Tuesday, April 12)
4. Sight reading – short excerpt to be played on sight (30 seconds allowed for quick study of excerpt)
5. Rhythms – clap & count 1 rhythm chosen from each section of the 2011 rhythm sheet (link posted below)
Percussion:
1. 2 Short prepared pieces – 1 on snare drum, 1 on mallets (music will be posted on Tuesday, April 12). There will be advanced and intermediate choices for each area. Students must play at least 1 advanced piece from the list.
2. 2 Major scales – ascending and descending; to be chosen at audition
3. Rhythms – clap & count 1 rhythm chosen from each section of the 2011 rhythm sheet (link posted below)
