2017 San Dieguito Academy Spring Concert & Awards Night

The “San Dieguito Academy Spring Concert & Awards Night” on Wednesday, May 24, featuring SDA’s Wind Ensemble I and II and introducing the incoming 9th-grade band students, was a huge success. Held in the gym to accommodate all of our music family members and friends in attendance, the concert was themed “Animation” and did not disappoint on any level.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the evening, which garnered a long standing ovation from the crowd, was Wind Ensemble I’s amazing performance of Gershwin’s famous “Rhapsody in Blue,” featuring band student Joseph Yu on piano. This performance, as part of the entire evening of fabulous music, demonstrated how high the bar can be raised when band director Jeremy Wuertz pushes his students to do their best. Video below.

Also contributing to the very special evening were the awards presented to deserving students, including “Most Improved Musician” for jazz band, Wind Ensemble II and Wind Ensemble 1; “Outstanding Musician” for both Wind Ensembles; the “Director’s Special Recognition Award”; the “Esprit de Corps Award’; “Most Dedicated Musician”; the “Quincy Jones Musicianship Award”; the “Director’s Award for Band”; the “Louis Armstrong Jazz Award”; and the “John Philip Sousa Band Award.” Also recognized were the music program’s seven artists-in-residence, and music honor cords were presented to graduating senior students who had completed six, seven and eight semesters of band.

Another highlight of the evening was the senior slideshow, featuring old and new photos of graduating senior band students, which was created by two band students.

The final moment of the evening, which gave the audience a taste of next year’s band, was a performance of songs from Elton John’s “The Lion King,” featuring both wind ensembles and the incoming 9th-grade band students.

The spectacular evening was capped off with cake and refreshments for all. Many thanks to Mr. Wuertz, the Music Council, the parents and the performers for an unforgettable night.

 

Dr. Jeanne Jones Spirit of SDA Award

The SDA Wind Ensembles I and II held their Spring Concert, the final performance of the year, on Wednesday, May 24, in the gym. The concert included award presentations to deserving music students and introduced a new annual award, the “Dr. Jeanne Jones Spirit of SDA Award,” in honor of the assistant principal and long-time SDA employee, who is retiring this year. The award was presented by band director Jeremy Wuertz, who spoke of the importance of the award in representing the spirit of the SDA community. Accompanying the award, a plaque that featured a photo of Dr. Jones, was a certificate with the following quote:

Dr. Jeanne Jones was a founder of San Dieguito Academy when it evolved from San Dieguito High School in 1996. A devoted booster of SDA’s students, staff and institutions, Dr. Jones has tirelessly shaped the inclusive, caring, creative soul of SDA that has become one of its defining characteristics. In recognition of her long-term, steadfast support of SDA’s music department, the “Dr. Jeanne Jones Spirit of SD Award” is established upon her retirement in 2017 to recognize annually a music student who embodies Dr. Jones’s integrity, creativity, wisdom, humility and leadership in nurturing the unique culture of SDA.

The music department and Music Council wish Dr. Jones the best of luck in the next chapter of her life. She will be greatly missed by staff and students.

 

May 24 – Spring Concert & Awards Night Dinner Pre-reception

We’re trying out something new this year. Families are invited to a dinner prior to our Spring Concert/Awards Night for a little conversation and to welcome the families of the incoming students. Call time for students will be 5:30 p.m and the concert starts at 6:30 so come join other band family members  in the patio west of the gym (as your students will need to have eaten before call time or after the concert).

For just $12.00 a person, you can order a boxed dinner from Rubio’s, containing your choice of a burrito especial, pinto beans, tortilla chips, salsa, and a chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. We’ll also provide a bottle of water for each box.

If you’d like a boxed dinner, please print out and complete this invitation with your choice of burrito and return it with your payment (by mail or through your student) by no later than Friday, May 19. Payment may be with cash or a check made out to “SDA Music Council.” We look forward to seeing you on the 24th!
