Mustang Fan Club:
After spending the last couple of weeks hunkering down next to a fire to brave this brutal Encinitas winter, I returned to discover that our sports teams actually continued to play through the “snowstorms” and “freezing temperatures.” Here’s where we are at, and where we are going:
Boys’ Soccer: They are undefeated against every team NOT named Torrey Pines. Unfortunately, they have played Torrey Pines twice. The boys continued their hot start to the season with a 2nd place finish in the Grossmont Tournament (by now, you should know who beat able to determine who beat them). Along the way, they trounced St. Augustine’s (a perennial powerhouse) 5-0 and Valhalla 4-0. Also, if you haven’t already heard the news, the boys kept possession of the Academy Cup by beating CCA in a barn-burner before break. The next game will be Wednesday at 7:00pm on our turf against Cathedral Catholic.
Girls’ Basketball: The reality is that these girls are short-handed. Injuries, LOP, and small numbers at try-outs have left the remaining players scrapping away, and not always ending up with great results. The good news is that the girls scored their first victory of the season in a tournament over the break. Tomorrow night, they head to Mission Vista. As this team gets all of its pieces back to together, I imagine we will see some tremendous growth in the next 6 weeks or so.
Girls’ Soccer: The team is hovering around a .500 record after kicking off winter break with a victory over Fallbrook. Lise Macphee was selected as player of the match. Among her terrific play was knocking home a sweet cross from Miriam Bloom for the first goal of the game. According to my 3-year old, Lise is also one heck of a babysitter. Next up, the team heads to Coronado on Wednesday to take on the Islanders.
Boys’ Basketball: The boys continue searching for their first one of the season, after an absolutely terrifying December schedule. They played nothing but powerhouses all month. They finished the month at the Santa Margarita tournament in Orange County, where they lost to the likes of Palos Verdes and Tesoro. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow…the team FINALLY hosts their first game of the season against Mission Vista (not exactly a cupcake, but should be a good game). Varsity plays at 7 PM. Let’s get out there and support our team!!
I recognize that this sports wrap-up was real short on jokes. I think I’m running out of funny sports comments. If you have any ideas for funny comments, please email me directly at Tim (dot) Hornig (at) sduhsd (dot) net. Thanks!
