Alumni march in the Encinitas Holiday Parade!

11/29/17 PARADE UPDATE

For those who are interested, we also are having a get-together at the Alumni Office at San Dieguito to decorate our parade signs: Thursday, November 30th at 6pm to 7:30 pm on campus. Anyone who’d like to help is more than welcome!

Here are the Parade details:

Dress festively and warmly. Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be standing and walking a lot. DO NOT WEAR A SANTA SUIT. Santa hats are OK, but not suits. Don’t bring anything to throw at the crowd, because you’ll be the one thrown out of the parade! 😉

This is a family event. Absolutely NO alcoholic beverages will be permitted. (Except inside a licensed venue…no drinks to go!)

We are responsible for keeping our staging area clean, so if you plan on bringing any snacks or drinks, you must dispose of your trash.

The parade starts at 5:30 sharp! You want to get to our staging area no later than 4:30. We are entry #96. Please look for us on 2nd St between H and I. Here’s a link to a PDF map containing the parade route and the location of our staging area. We’ll probably be done around 7:30 pm.

Parking and shuttles are available at Ecke Sports Park (YMCA) on Saxony Road or at the Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas parking lot at 351 Santa Fe Drive.

A free shuttle will be running from these locations from 4:00pm-8:30pm. Busses drop off at the NCTD bus station on S. Vulcan Ave. You may also walk from City Hall and other local parking areas.

(If you drive in and park in downtown Encinitas, you may be towed, so be very careful where you park.)

Parking at Moonlight Beach is not for parade participants, it is to be used for vehicle/float preparation only and authorized parade volunteers and staff.

2016 Parade Marchers!

We had such a fun time last year, marching in the parade behind the band, so much so that everybody talked about making it an annual event. This year’s parade experience will be a little bit different, however.

First, we’re going to have our own entry!

Second, the parade theme this year is “Celebrating the Arts.” and our entry is entitled “San Dieguito: Nurturing Artists since 1936.” To that end our entry will contain two elements:

  • Local notable Mustang artists. We have two featured local Mustangs artists who’ll be riding in a convertible; we have room for additional local Mustang artists who’d like to walk right behind the convertible. And…
  • General Mustang Alumni, just like last year. These hardy souls will march behind the artists, carrrying signs designating their class years.

We are therefore looking for people to walk in the parade with us. In order to participate, they MUST:

  1. Be willing and physically able to spend approximately FOUR hours (to arrive no later than 4:30 pm and check in, wait for the parade to begin, and then wait for our turn in the spotlight! We should be done around 7:30 pm.)
  2. Be willing and physically able to walk the length of the parade route (as well as the equally long staging area route).
  3. Sign up in advance, ASAP, because SPACE IS LIMITED. Last year, we encouraged walk-ins to join us, but this year due to space limitations we can’t guarantee that last-minute entries will be able to walk with us.

This last point can’t be emphasized enough: there are no guarantees in life, but there are definitely better probable outcomes if you sign up!!!! Email me at sda.alumni@gmail.com to do so.

ALSO! We tentatively have a convertible, but just in case that falls through, are there any alumni who would be willing to lend us (and drive) an emergency backup convertible that can hold four or five people comfortably?
