Thanks to our Phase 3 brick installers: Earl Flores & Sons!<\/p><\/div>On Tuesday, February 3, the Phase 3 Installation Team gathered in front of the bell tower for a couple hours of early-morning masonry work. <\/p>\n

The day before, Earl Flores (’95), his brother Andy (’00), and Earl, Sr., carefully measured the cut lines for Phase 3. This morning’s efforts would consist of the actual installation. As the Installation Team prepared the concrete, Alumni Coordinators Sue Cooper and Bonnie Wren sorted the bricks.<\/p>\n

Click the above image to view a large version of this photo; we’ll upload a better, more clear version after we have the bricks sealed.<\/p><\/div>The occasion was bittersweet, as Alumni Chair Boydd Galland (’60) had told us many times how much he looked forward to being there for the Phase 3 installation.<\/p>\n

Boydd was always in charge of our installations. He sketched the layout as soon as we had the number of bricks we needed to complete a phase and showed up early to sort the bricks so the installers would know where to place them within the design. He had presented his sketch for Phase 3 at the December Alumni Committee meeting so we had a copy for reference. <\/p>\n

As we laid the last brick, we couldn’t help but feel that the prankster Boydd seemed to play one last joke on us:<\/p>\n

Andy<\/strong>: Just one more brick to go and we’re done! Where is the last brick? We need a 4″ x 8″.<\/p>\n

Bonnie<\/strong>: (looks around wildly) <\/em>Oh, no! We’re really missing a brick? <\/p>\n

Sue<\/strong>: You guys better find it or we will have a hole!<\/p>\n

Andy<\/strong>: Don’t panic! We can fill a hole with a blank brick, right?<\/p>\n

Bonnie<\/strong>: (panicking)<\/em> No! Lemme look for it! (Looks in the truck, in the grass, in the trash, around the bell tower, but no brick)<\/em> Oh, this is terrible! Did we miscount our order? Or did we really lose a brick?<\/p>\n

Sue<\/strong>: We’ll have to use a blank brick after all, darn it.<\/p>\n

Andy<\/strong>: There’s a blank over there. I’ll get it… (stands up)<\/em> Hey! Look at that! I was sitting on it all along!<\/p>\n

Yes, Boydd would’ve just loved<\/em> that little episode.

Your intrepid alumni coordinator now knows the difference between a cursive Q and the number 2<\/p><\/div>The Phase 3 Installation Team also repaired the bricks in Phase 2, which were damaged during the Phase 2 installation, as well as replaced the Southworth brick in Phase 1, which had an incorrect inscription: “2B” instead of “QB” (for “quarterback”).<\/p>\n
