Sheryl Bode<\/strong>
Head Coach
<\/strong>Coach Bode has been a Spanish teacher at SDA for 22 years.  She has thrived working with kids both in and outside of the classroom advising clubs and traveling abroad with them. Coach Bode has always wanted to coach kids here at SDA and finally a position opened up in the 2022 season. She played  competitive softball as a child and in high school. Her nickname was killer arm Bode!  Her motivation and joy for sports has led her to run over 20 marathons and other shorter distance races.  Coach Bode is excited to be sharing her passion for running with her students and to be supporting and encouraging them to be the best they can be on the field and off the field. She is grateful for the instruction of Head Coach Steve.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Steve Edwards<\/strong>
Hurdles Coach<\/strong>
Coach Edwards joined SDA Track & Field last season as the Head Coach. Prior to SDA he was at Pacific Ridge for nine years as the Head Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field. Coach Edwards started the track & field program at Pacific Ridge in 2012. Since 2012, he has coached a variety of events, including distance, throws, sprints, and hurdles. Over the last six years as the hurdle coach PRS has had 14 CIF qualifiers, 5 Coastal League Champions & 3 CIF Finals D2 Medalist. In his first year at SDA he helped guide a talented team of five senior hurdlers to CIF Prelims and four of them to personal best. As the Pacific Ridge Head Cross Country Coach, his girls\u2019 team won CIF San Diego D5 three times and were second twice, and had a team or individual qualify for the State meet ten years in a row. Steve is a USATF Certified Level 1 Coach and keeps current on coaching through online training and seminars. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Mike Fitchett<\/strong>
Pole Vault Coach
<\/strong>This is Coach Fitchett’s 10th year on SDA’s coaching staff. He got his start in coaching at U.C. Davis where he was the springboard diving coach. He went on to coach Clemson University, U.C. San Diego, and University of San Diego. Over the years, Mike has produced 14 NCAA College All-Americans and 9 NCAA Championship finalists. He has also been awarded 3 NCAA \u201cCoach of the Year\u201d awards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certifications include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 United States Track & Field Level I and Level II Coach certification. (combined events)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 SafeSport Certification<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 PVSCB Pole Vault Safety Certification Board Certified<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 10 years coaching at San Dieguito, his pole vaulters have enjoyed much success. Mike has produced 23 CIF finalists, a San Diego CIF Champion (Kevin Ward) and three California State CIF top 8 finalists. Mike has also coached the Speed and Strength Program at SDA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike was a 4-time NCAA All-American springboard diver at Chico State and competed at the United States Senior National level. Mike\u2019s interests include traveling to remote parts of the world, eating interesting food and watching any and all sporting events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Hank Glass
Throws (Shot Put & Discus) Coach<\/strong>
Coach Glass is a graduate of Nichols College and has 32 years of clinical experience. He has been a member of the United States Track and Field medical teams and team doctor for U.S. Pan American Games. Hank\u2019s expertise in track & field includes NCAA programs, high schools and club teams. He was the tech advisor for both University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. Hank was a coach for the Atlanta Track Club and has worked with Nike Running camps. He has published articles in Running Times and Marathon and Beyond. In the past nine years, he coached track and field at a high school in Vermont and here in San Diego. Specializing in the throwing events, Hank has produced three high school state champions at Woodstock High School (VT), where he was the head track coach and cross country coach. Hank also coaches the Speed and Strength Program at SDA. Hanks interests include running where he has been a Masters Competitor for the Atlanta Track Club for 12 years. He is also a four-time Boston Marathon Competitor.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Gordy Haskett
Distance Coach<\/strong>
Coach Gordy has been coaching cross country and the track & field distance crew at SDA since 2001. He is a \u201cdistance guy\u201d and beloved coach. He was the driving force for getting our fantastic track and excellent field facilities. Gordy is a 1978 Graduate of San Dieguito High School and equally famous as the baker and owner of Gordy\u2019s Bakery in Encinitas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Christina Remmling
High Jumps Coach<\/strong>
Coach Remmling is a 1976 San Dieguito High School graduate with over 15 years experience competing in youth, high school, college and club track and field. She was also a member of several international teams. Christina was introduced to the track and field world at the age of 10 as a sprinter and hurdler. She was the Junior Olympic National high jump champion in 1974. At San Dieguito, Christina competed in high jump, long jump, and relays and still holds the school records in the high jump and long jump. Upon graduation from SDHS, Christina attended UCLA where she received a BA in Linguistics and competed on the track team all four years and was a member of the 1977 and National Championship team. She previously coached track and field for two seasons at Crossroads School in Santa Monica, California while pursuing her multiple subject teaching credential at Cal State Northridge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mecole Finch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sprints Coach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach\u00a0Meme is a former collegiate track & field athlete and experienced track\u00a0coach\u00a0committed to athlete development through disciplined training and intentional\u00a0coaching. She competed at the D1 collegiate level at\u00a0Campbell University\u00a0from 2004 to 2008\u00a0\u00a0where she gained firsthand experience in high-level training, competition preparation, and performance standards. Mecole earned her B.S.W in Social Work from Campbell University in 2008. Mecole is also a Certified Zumba Instructor and enjoys teaching dance and fitness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following her collegiate career, Mecole transitioned into\u00a0coaching, serving as a Track & Field Head\u00a0Coach\u00a0at Carmel Valley Middle School and Saint Margaret Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano. Under\u00a0Coach\u00a0Meme\u2019s leadership, Carmel Valley Middle School has successfully won Boys and Girls Track and Field Big Eight\u00a0\u00a0Conference Championships in 2024 and 2025 under her tutu-ledge . She has led structured practices, coordinated competition schedules, and trained athletes in speed development, endurance conditioning, and race strategy. Known for her supportive yet structured\u00a0coaching\u00a0style,\u00a0Coach\u00a0Meme focuses on proper mechanics, injury awareness, and building mental toughness in developing athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romey Thornton<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long Jump\/Triple Jump Coach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Thornton joins the SDA Track & Field team this season as the Long and Triple Jump coach. Coach Thornton competed in track and field for over a decade with a focus on sprinting, long jump and triple jump and was a regular qualifier for High School invitationals throughout Los Angeles and surrounding areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His athletic interest also includes soccer, where he captained Moorpark College to a State Championship runner up season, surfing, and snowboarding where he was the founder of San Diego State’s snowboard club and was a key figure in bringing collegiate snowboard competitions to the West Coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a graduate of San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, an Associates in Nutrition, and is currently pursuing additional certifications in the sports science and athlete training spectrum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from SDSU, Coach Thornton spent 20 years in Sports Marketing where he worked with and represented some of the highest caliber action sports athletes in the world, including World Champions as well as Olympic and XGames Medalists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having previously coached several seasons of youth soccer and currently coaching youth flag football, Coach Thornton looks forward to bringing his experience in track and field, joy of coaching young adults, and encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle to the SDA Track & Field Program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
