RIBEIRO, MANUEL ‘MEL’
Manuel ‘Mel’ Ribeiro, long time resident of Encinitas, passed away July 27, 2006 after a brief illness. Born June 5, 1927, Mel was 79 years old.
He was born in Gloucester, MA to Manuel and Mary Ribeiro. The family moved to San Diego in 1927. Mel served in the Army and was stationed in Japan.
He graduated from San Diego State with a Teaching Credential and taught at San Dieguito High School his whole career which spanned 36 years. His primary subject was Spanish, but in his early career he also taught Journalism and History.
Mel retired in 1986, and continued substitute teaching for several years after that for the San Dieguito School District. He was loved by many of his students who have kept in touch with him over the years.
Mel is survived by his wife of 53 years Rita, and his daughters and sons-in-law Denise and Jim Kelly, and Karen and Miles Dupriest as well as his grandchildren that he cherished, Tanya (Kelly) Jurchenko, Tami (Kelly) Koske, Cameron Dupriest, Jimmy Kelly, Bryce Dupriest and Austin Dupriest, his brother Louie Ribeiro of San Diego and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m., at St. John’s Catholic Church in Encinitas, with a reception immediately following in the parish hall. If you wish to make a donation in his memory the family requests, San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.
