Encinitas City Mayor Catherine Blakespear started things off by reading a proclamation from City of Encinitas declaring this a special day on behalf of John Fairchild (’61). Although a graduate of Torrey Pines High School, the Mayor told the audience about her own family members who graduated from San Dieguito: her great-uncle John Miller was a member of the Class of 1937 and her mother and aunt are also alumni.
After presenting John Fairchild with the proclamation, Sue Sieber Cooper (’66) told the audience a little about John. The Fairchilds were a military family, moving frequently and the kids attending many different schools. John attended both Pacific View Elementary and Central School, Earl Warren and Oak Crest Junior High.
The audience laughed when Sue described how John was cut from the 9th grade basketball team. His mother had a chat with the coach and he was reinstated as the water boy, a development that turned out to be lucky because he was able to make it back on the team by the end of the year.
And the rest, as they say, is history!
After Sue presented John with his Hall of Fame certificate, John spent some time talking to the audience about his experiences and answering questions from the audience.
