UPDATE MAY 26, 2016

It’s official! The Time Capsule belongs to the Class of 2000!

Unfortunately, everything inside was kind of mushy and stunk to high heaven. A book containing messages from the Class of 2000 must’ve been written in water-based ink, because the ink is washed out. There was a cassette tape, a disposable camera, a t-shirt (with several holes in it), a yearbook, one of George Stimson’s yearbooks, Mustang newspapers, lots of magazines, including Maxim (who snuck that in???!!), the National Enquirer, and People. etc.

None of it was salvagable and was possibly toxic to keep around.

We contacted the class reps for 2000; while we waited for their decision the library staff requested that the capsule be moved, because the contents smelled so terribly AWFUL. The class reps decided (wisely) that other than a camera (our photography teacher will try to develop the film) the materials inside were not salvageable.

Then Catherine Bickel Harrison, (’00) kindly sent the school photos of her classmates filling the original time capsule. All photos are above in the slideshow.

MARCH 2, 2016

During our recent construction work, the grading machines uncovered an unlabeled time capsule.

This is a great find, considering that previous construction projects destroyed some of our time capsules. We are lucky to have construction personnel on this project who noticed the object before it was destroyed!

The time capsule was located in what was known as Senior Court in the last 20 years, but what used to be called Center Court in the mid 1980s, in between the 90s and the 100s buildings (just east of the old Roundabout Theatre). The 90s and the 100s were built during the mid sixties, so we’re guessing the capsule was buried at that time.

And yet, we are assuming it IS a time capsule. As Principal Paige remarked, “Who knows? We’re hoping we won’t open it and find a missing custodian.”

If you know the identity of this time capsule, please let us know! In the meantime, it sits in a place of honor in our Media Center/Library, where we hope someone at the upcoming Faculty & Staff Reunion might recognize it.

In the meantime, Principal Paige believes a good time to finally open it might be in May, after our AP Exams.
