Alumni Committee Chair Boydd Galland (’60), passes away; memorial service set for 3:30 pm Sun., Jan. 18th

We were shocked and saddened to learn that our good friend, Boydd Dixon Galland (’60) passed away last week. (See the family’s obituary for Boydd on this page.) A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Sunday, January 18th, 3:30pm at Moonlight Beach for all of Boydd’s family and friends.

Boydd was a steadfast Mustang in every sense of the word; he not only was our Alumni Committee Chair, but he also co-created and promoted the Mustang Legacy Project. Truly, it was his baby from start to finish.

He and classmate Jay Helmantoler (’60) attended endless board meetings and lobbied hard to obtain all necessary school district permissions to install the bricks on campus. Then Boydd researched paver companies in order to get the Alumni Association the best deal.

As soon as we would finalize the number of brick sponsorships in Phases 1, 2 and 3, he’d painstakingly sketch out an installation arrangement that suited the assortment of bricks in all three sizes.

Finally, when time came for the actual installation, Boydd would oversee the placement of each and every brick.

Boydd and Jay originally hoped to honor outstanding athletes with the brick project, but they soon realized alumni wanted to honor more than sporting achievements.

“People were remembering students who were Thespians, or members of CSF, or in the marching band or in some other activity,” said Boydd. “There were other people and things that belonged in a Hall of Fame.”

So true — and now we remember Boydd for many things, too, but especially for his enduring love of San Dieguito, as well as his efforts to help other Mustangs preserve their memories of our school.

Condolences may be sent to the Galland Family, 2759 Ascot Ave, Carlsbad, Ca. 92009.

In lieu of flowers, Boydd’s family asked that donations be made to the Mustang Legacy Project, c/o SDA Foundation, PO Box 235109, Encinitas, CA 92023-5109. Paypal donations to the Mustang Legacy Project may be made by clicking here.
