The SDHS Veterans Association and the SDA Foundation have worked out an agreement to save the veterans scholarship & memorial fund program from fading away.
Students who might not otherwise be considered for scholarships or grants but have a demonstrated determination and tenacity to pursue their education are eligible for this scholarship, which is awarded in the name of one of the fallen alumni listed on the memorial.
In the Fall 2011 issue of Mustang Memories, we wrote:
… The San Dieguito High School Veterans Association is still active, but only David and Jim remain … Jim worries that the Association, as well as the scholarships it gives every year in the names of the memorial honorees, will disappear once he and David retire. “We need new blood to keep it going.”
Since then, the Mustang veterans group and the Foundation worked out a solution: the Veterans Association closed their nonprofit organization and turned the remaining funds in their account over to the Foundation, which in return promises to continue the scholarship program just as the SDHS Veterans Association intended it to be maintained. The SDA Foundation will also maintain the Fallen Alumni Memorial with money donated to this cause.
Chato and Jim (and other San Dieguito alumni veterans) will always be welcome to participate in matters relating to the scholarship and memorial program at our monthly Alumni Committee meetings.
The SDAF board of directors thanks Chato and Jim for their faith in the Foundation and looks forward to continuing the tradition of honoring our Mustang veterans.
